Heineken Champions Cup Final 2020

Sportrooms were proud to work with European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) to source and manage the accommodation for the hastily rearranged Heineken Champions Cup Final in October 2020.

As with many elements of life and sport the plans for the Heineken Cup Final were severely impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic. The Final was originally planned to be staged in Marseille in May as part of a weekend long festival of rugby and these plans had to be postponed. Once EPCR were able to safely resume the competition in August discussions began on how to play the Final in the most secure and safe environment.

Sportsrooms were asked to source hotel options for the two competing teams, match officials, EPCR staff and suppliers across six potential Final locations. The added complication was that the Final venue would not be decided until after the Semi Finals were complete.

Sportsrooms focus was to source hotels that not only met all the complex requirements of two of the best club sides in the world but also met our comprehensive expectations in terms of safety and Covid19 policies.

From an initial short list of 26 hotels across 6 locations, working with EPCR we selected three hotels to be used for the event. After the Semi Finals were complete it was announced that the Heineken Champions Cup Final 2020 would be played at Ashton Gate Stadium in Bristol.

From this point the team at Sportsrooms had three weeks to contract the hotels, liaise with the teams and event organisers to ensure their accommodation needs and requirements would be met and deliver a comprehensive accommodation programme for one of Europe’s stand out annual events.

Sportsrooms provided operational support onsite for the event with arrivals and guests staying throughout the week culminating on Friday when the teams arrived at their respective hotels, Marriott Bristol Royal and Radisson Blu Bristol. As the guests settled into the hotels attention turned to the highlight of the weekend the Heineken Champions Cup Final. in a thrilling encounter Exeter Chiefs outlasted Racing 92 to be crowned European Champions for the first time in their history.

The feedback on the weekend was excellent and Sportsrooms are proud to have played a small part in making this major sports event happen in the most unusual of circumstances in the most unusual of years!
