Leicestershire CCC achieve Carbon Neutral Team Travel status

Leicestershire CCC has achieved certified Carbon Neutral Sports Team Travel status after pledging to become the first cricket club to join Sportsrooms’ ‘Green Team’ initiative at the start of last season.

During the course of the 2022 cricket season, Sportsrooms and Leicestershire Cricket Club monitored and recorded the First XI and Second XI car and coach travel as well as hotel stays, in order to calculate the Club’s carbon footprint generated across away fixtures.

Sportsrooms worked with partners Carbon Neutral Britain to use this calculation to offset the team’s emissions via Carbon Neutral Britain’s projects around the world, which include tree planting initiatives as well as projects across the developing world that help provide education, employment, clean water, energy and a positive impact on the local wildlife and ecology.

Highlighting the significant impact team travel has on the environment, Sportsrooms’ ‘Green Team’ programme is an industry-leading initiative designed to help professional sports teams put in place actions to reduce their carbon footprint.

Over the course of the 2022 season, Sportsrooms tracked and monitored the Club’s impact on the environment through a tailored travel programme. This included adopting more sustainable methods of team travel – including sourcing hotels which champion sustainability to reduce the Club’s impact on the environment – before committing resources through the Green Team initiative to offset remaining carbon emissions fully through verified global projects.

The season-long study measured an output of 25.3 tCO2e (tonnes (t) of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent (e)) over the season, made up from 34,432 miles travelled by car, 2,578 miles travelled by coach and 955 nights in hotel rooms.

Sportsrooms also works with The Future Forest Company on other sports initiatives – one of which saw them commit to planting a tree for every six scored by the Foxes throughout their 2022 Vitality Blast campaign.

Leicestershire CCC are proud to be extending the relationship throughout 2023 with Sportsrooms once again as the Club’s Official Travel Partner.

Sean Jarvis, Chief Executive Officer at Leicestershire CCC said“At Leicestershire CCC, green is our identity and is a visual representation of all we are on the pitch – and as a business we’re making it a vital mission for the Club to also thread that theme of green through the way we manage our actions and attitudes.

“We believe we are the first of the first-class counties to achieve Green Team status, which is a fantastic achievement and testament to the Club’s growing commitment to improving sustainability.”

Chris Newsham, Director at Sportsrooms, commented: “At Sportsrooms, we are proud to have helped Leicestershire Cricket to deliver a carbon neutral team travel programme last season; this is a testimony to the club’s commitment to sustainability.

“The programme forms part of the wider environmental initiatives we have been working with the club on over the past few seasons including tree planning for every six hit by the team during the Vitality Blast.

“We look forward to helping the club to reduce its carbon footprint for travel further during the 2023 season.”
